Environment Canada has issued a yellow wind warning for all three of Prince Edward Island’s counties for Friday night and into Saturday morning.
CBC P.E.I. meteorologist Jay Scotland said Islanders can expect a warm but very windy Friday.
“An approaching cold front will produce a strong southerly wind, with gusts potentially topping 50 to 80 km/h by late Friday afternoon,” Scotland said.
“Damaging winds are possible Friday night as the cold front moves in, with southerly gusts potentially topping 80 to over 100 km/h.”
While the strongest winds are set to happen Friday night, Scotland said Saturday could also very gusty with a 50 to 70 km/h gusts possible in the morning.
“Temperatures will soar into the low teens due to that strong but warm wind, which means more melting snow in addition to rainfall amounts near 10 mm to locally as much as 20 mm before the rain eases into early Saturday,” he said.
Environment Canada warns that strong winds may cause tree branches to break and damage utility lines, leading to power outages.
Scotland advised Islanders to secure loose outdoor objects around their homes like decorations, and prepare for travel disruptions on the Confederation Bridge.
