TAIPEI – One person died, and eight others were injured after a man threw a smoke grenade at a Taipei subway station and then wielded a knife at bystanders in a nearby commercial district, local media said Friday.

As a result of the grenade incident, a man in his 50s was taken to a hospital after suffering cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported.

The assailant allegedly threw a smoke grenade near an exit of Taipei Main Station on the MRT system at around 5:30 p.m., local media reported. The smoke was seen drifting onto station platforms.

The man then headed north and attacked people at a department store near MRT Zhongshan Station, according to the agency. He reportedly later jumped to his death.
