Ariana Grande dipped into television history’s fashion archives to promote her upcoming “Saturday Night Live” episode.
The “Wicked” star, 32, slipped into a vintage Bob Mackie gown that comedy legend Carol Burnett, 92, originally wore during an opening monologue of “The Carol Burnett Show” in 1973.
Stylist Law Roach sourced the yellow, brown and saffron colored, chevron-striped halter-neck gown —complete with matching shawl — from Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.
The look sold for $3,840 at the “Bold Luxury: Bob Mackie, Stage Glamour & The Couture Edit” auction earlier this month.

The Mackie piece with the highest gavel price at the auction ($57,600) was a 1978 sequined costume worn by his longtime muse Cher — who, perhaps not coincidentally, is the musical guest for this Saturday’s episode of “SNL.”
Grande’s pick connects her to Mackie’s storied legacy of dressing entertainment royalty. The legendary designer created an estimated 17,000 costumes for “The Carol Burnett Show” across its 11-year run.
Mackie also worked on Marilyn Monroe’s iconic 1962 “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” gown as an assistant to designer Jean Louis. Kim Kardashian famously revived the piece for the 2022 Met Gala.
Mackie’s archive has become a go-to for contemporary stars. Miley Cyrus, Zendaya and Sabrina Carpenter have all pulled from his catalog for red carpet moments, and Taylor Swift wore some of his glitziest designs for her “Life of a Showgirl” album rollout.

Grande has been on a press blitz for “Wicked: For Good,” which hit theaters last month. She reprises her role as Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba in director Jon M. Chu’s two-part adaptation.
This will be the “Eternal Sunshine” singer’s fifth overall billing on “SNL.”
She previously served as musical guest in 2014 and March 2024, pulled double duty as host and musical guest in 2016, and most recently hosted in October 2024.
