Massive delay to Dundalk races after multi-vehicle crash as punters warned to avoid area

THERE is a massive delay to the Friday night racing at Dundalk due to a ‘multi-vehicle crash’.
The famed Irish track is hit by ‘significant’ trouble on a nearby main road – with motorists being advised to avoid the area.

The first race was due off at 4.30pm but has been pushed back to at least 5.30pm.
Those travelling on the M1 to the racecourse are stuck in traffic with queues of up to 90 minutes.
A rule requiring horses to be at the track at least one hour before race time has been scrapped.
A notification from Gardai said: “Motorists are advised to avoid the M1 Northbound and the M50 approaching the M1.”

While TII added: “Diversions in place at Junction 7. Avoid area if possible. Emergency Services in attendance, recovery in progress. Expect delays.”
The pile-up is believed to have included five vehicles and occurred around midday.
Dundalk is Ireland’s only all-weather track and is known for its ‘Friday nights under the lights’ action.
There are eight races on the card but the last was meant to be off at 8.30pm.

Given the significant delays it is not clear if the full card can yet go ahead or if some races will be rescheduled for another time.
Dundalk lies about 55 miles north of the centre of Dublin.
Already a number of horses have been withdrawn, including Tyson Fury, who is named after the heavyweight boxer.
He was pulled from the 8pm race over 1m2½f, which is now due off at 9pm.
