Sling TV’s latest live TV pass is perfect for holiday binge-watching

Back in August, Sling TV did something no other live TV streaming service had done before: it launched a day pass. For just $5, you could access all the live TV channels included in its Orange plan — which has over 30 channels — for a single day, instead of committing to a full month-long subscription that costs $46.
Sling TV initially launched three different day passes: a $5 one-day pass, a $10 weekend pass (Friday to Sunday), and a $15 seven-day pass.
Now, just before the holidays, Sling TV is switching its weekend pass to be a three-day pass for the same $10, allowing you to choose any three days to watch live TV instead of just the weekend.
“Our customers asked for more flexibility, saying they wanted to use their pass when they needed it, not when the calendar dictated,” Sling TV SVP Seth Van Sickel said in a press release. “The new Sling TV 3-Day Pass lets subscribers decide exactly when their three days of live TV starts.”

Compared to its one-day pass, which provides 24 hours of access to Sling TV’s Orange plan channels, the three-day pass offers better value: you get three full days for $10, effectively giving you an extra day for free.
With the holidays approaching, Sling TV’s change from a weekend pass to a three-day pass couldn’t come at a better time. Since Christmas Eve falls on a Wednesday this year, you can purchase a three-day pass for $10 on Christmas Eve and enjoy all the movies and shows you want on Christmas Day and December 26 — perfect for the Wednesday-to-Friday holiday period.
These day passes are also ideal for casual sports fans. If there’s a football game you really want to watch (such as the games about to start in the college football bowl), you can sign up for just a single day and catch it without having to pay $46 for a full month of Sling TV or another live TV streaming service like YouTube TV.
The Sling TV Orange plan, included with its day passes, features channels like ESPN, CNN, TNT, TBS, AMC, and more. You can check out a complete list of channels here, which includes 34 in total.
I really like the idea of these day passes, and it would be great if more live TV streaming services, such as YouTube TV and DirecTV, adopted them.
Overall, Sling TV’s monthly Orange plan still offers the best value. At $46 per month, it works out to about $1.53 per day — much cheaper than a $5 day pass. However, if you only plan to watch live TV for a day or a weekend each month, that’s when the value of a day pass really shines.
When Sling TV first introduced its day passes, their value even caught Disney’s attention. Disney took legal action, claiming the passes “violate their licensing agreement.” Ultimately, the attempt to block them failed, with a judge ruling that “Disney hasn’t shown it has lost customers due to the Passes.” So, in the end, Sling TV’s day passes got to live on.
I really like the idea of these day passes, and it would be great if more live TV streaming services, such as YouTube TV and DirecTV, adopted them. Many people I know only watch live TV for major events like the Super Bowl or the Oscars, and a pass like these would be ideal for them.
