CBS’ Eagles trade rumor gives insight into impact of Brandon Graham comeback on deadline plans

The Philadelphia Eagles could be getting a much-needed boost to their pass-rush soon.

The Eagles were already in trouble along the edge before the unexpected retirement of Za’Darius Smith, but that has put Philly in an even more precarious situation.

However, Philly could be getting a reinforcement soon, as it was reported that retired edge rusher Brandon Graham is talking with the Eagles about making a comeback after he retired during the offseason.

CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports that Graham was considering returning even before the retirement of Smith but adds that Smith’s calling it quits “could have accelerated the timeline.”

When it comes to what impact that will have on the Eagles’ desire to add an edge rusher at the trade deadline, Jones said it won’t have any.

Legendary Eagles pass rusher Brandon Graham is expected to return to the team soon. While some related Graham’s impending return to Za’Darius Smith’s retirement, I’m told the Graham was interested in returning before that vacancy was created, though it could have accelerated the timeline. Graham had been considering a return well before Smith called it quits. The Eagles have desired edge rush and cornerback help for weeks, and Graham’s return will not preclude Philly from making another move at edge rusher.

While the Eagles and their fans should be excited about Graham’s potential return, the fact of the matter is he hasn’t played all season long and there’s no telling what he’ll be able to provide to the pass-rush.

As a result, the Eagles can not simply rely on Graham to solve their issue, and thankfully it appears that is not going to be the case.

Acquiring an impact pass-rusher is extremely difficult to do, though. Those types of players are always very expensive and there is a ton of competition for one of the premium positions in the NFL.

But Howie Roseman has shown time and time again that he’s a magician when it comes to trades, so the Eagles have a better chance than most teams to get something significant done.
