Blue Jays’ Gausman to be ‘cleated up, ready to go’ in relief for potential Game 7

After a heartbreaking 6-2 loss in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, the Toronto Blue Jays starter was already looking ahead to his next outing after the game.
Gausman, who threw 91 pitches over 5.2 innings of one-run ball on Friday, told reporters post-game that he’ll be in “cleated up and ready to go” in the Blue Jays’ bullpen for a potential Game 7.
In all three of his outings this post-season, the 34-year-old has gone exactly 5.2 frames and given up two or fewer runs.
Gausman appeared to be available for Toronto out of the bullpen in Game 4 of the ALDS, making his way out to join the Blue Jays’ relievers in the middle of the contest.
The two-time all-star hasn’t pitched out of the bullpen since the 2021 playoffs, when he was with the San Francisco Giants. In that game, he entered in the ninth inning of a Game 5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, getting two outs.
To give Gausman the chance to pitch again, the Blue Jays will need to secure a Game 6 win on Sunday at Rogers Centre. Rookie Trey Yesavage will take the ball for Toronto in its first elimination game of the year.
