A Wisconsin-based company is voluntarily recalling several lots of freeze-dried pet treats sold under four brand names in three states due to possible salmonella contamination, according to an announcement.
Foodynamics, located in Wales, Wisconsin, issued the corrected and expanded recall for specific lots of its Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, Kanu Pets, and What’s In the Bowl products. The recall followed routine U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) testing that detected the presence of salmonella.
The affected products were shipped via UPS to retailers in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida, with a total of eight packages distributed to consumers. To date, no illnesses in pets or humans have been reported.
According to the FDA, salmonella infection in pets is rare but can cause vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, loss of appetite, and low activity levels. Infected pets may also spread the bacteria to humans through waste, saliva, or contaminated surfaces.
In humans, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, the agency said.
