Encouraged by the assistance the Perth pitch offered the Australian pacers during their seven-wicket win over India in the first ODI, Josh Hazlewood hopes for a similar surface when the venue hosts the first of the Ashes series in November. Hazlewood kept the Indian batters on a leash as he bowled seven overs for just 20 runs and took two wickets, including that of Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer.
“For sure. Perth always offers some nice bounce and pace which has served us well in the past, especially with our bowlers who all offer something different,” Hazlewood replied when quizzed if he hopes for a similar pitch for the first Ashes Test, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
Hazlewood was happy with his spell in Perth.
“It was a nice start. [My] rhythm felt good off the back of New Zealand. Everything is feeling good at the moment, a nice way to start the build [to the Ashes],” he said.
Hazlewood also allayed any concerns about his fitness and is quite confident of playing all five Tests of the Ashes. “That’s the life of a fast bowler; everyone is carrying some sort of niggle. My body feels great right now, I am very confident of getting through all five without any dramas,” Hazlewood said.
Australia will be without their captain and pace spearhead Pat Cummins for the first Ashes Test starting November 21. Cummins is recovering from a lumbar bone stress in his lower back and Steve Smith is likely to step into the captaincy role.
“The team is better with (Cummins) in it,” Smith told reporters. “Hopefully he can get right and if he plays three or five Tests, as many as we can get out of him, it’s the best thing for the team. We’ll see what happens. Pat’s still got a few things that he can tick off. Obviously he said he’s unlikely for that first Test but you never know – he’s a healer, he gets well quickly.”
