Roads closed and shops evacuated after unexploded ordnance found in Bridgend

South Wales Police confirmed they were called just before 1.10pm today (Thursday 23 October) following reports of a device found in Cheapside, Bridgend.
Roads closed around Cheapside and Tremains Road
As a precaution, Tremains Road and Cheapside have been closed. Officers are also advising the public to avoid Brackla Street from Castle Bingo down to Wilko’s, as well as the areas around Plumb Centre, Papa Johns and the Honda dealership.
Shops and offices evacuated
Police said a number of premises have been evacuated, including Aldi, Asda, Brackla House and a building site on Cheapside. The measures are described as precautionary while the incident is dealt with.
Police statement
In a statement, South Wales Police said:
“We were called just before 1.10pm this afternoon with a report of an unexploded ordnance device having been found in Cheapside, Bridgend. As a precaution Tremains Road and Cheapside have been closed and we are advising the public to avoid the area.”
What happens next
Specialist teams are expected to assess the device. Police have asked members of the public to avoid the area until further notice.
