Award-winning journalist Nick McKenzie says ‘intimidation’ incident won’t stop him

Award-winning investigative journalist Nick McKenzie has spoken out after his home was reportedly targeted in an apparent intimidation incident, saying he has “strong suspicions” about who was behind it.

Victoria Police are investigating the incident, according to The Age, which took place earlier this month.

McKenzie told Today the incident was “designed to intimidate” him and involved an attack on his home’s CCTV system.

“An offender entering or surveilling the property, getting onto the roof and doing certain things in a manner designed not just to mess with the system and the home, but to leave a message,” he said.

The Gold Walkley winner said he had “full confidence” in the police investigation into the event.

“As an investigative reporter, you do lots of work, annoying lots of people. That’s the job,” he said.

He speculated that the incident might be linked to a recent investigation which would be published as a major series this weekend in Nine newspapers and on 60 Minutes.

McKenzie said the incident wouldn’t stop his work

“As soon as the press is silenced, then we no longer have a free press,” he said.
