Virat Kohli’s still got it. His batting might have failed to yield any returns in the first two ODIs of the ongoing three-match series in Australia, but his fielding levels haven’t dropped.

He showed that on Saturday (October 25) in the third match at the Sydney Cricket Ground with a sharp catch. On the third ball of the 23rd over in the first innings, opener Matthew Short blasted a powerful sweep at a tossed-up gift from spinner Washington Sundar.

He seemed to have middled it, but didn’t find the gap past Kohli at square leg. It went straight to the former Indian captain, giving him little time to react. Kohli cupped his hands in front of his face, leaning back and almost closing his eyes too, but the sharp timing meant the ball stuck, right beside his eyes.

Watch the catch here:

Short walked back for 30 (41), a knock that included a couple of boundaries. India’s spinners had built a bit of pressure on him in the previous few overs and Sundar reaped the rewards.

The crowd in Sydney, mostly made up of the visitors’ blue, seemed delighted at Kohli’s catch. It’s likely his last international match in Australia, the country where he made his name. He’s 37 and only plays ODIs now; there are not many matches of that format scheduled for India in Australia in the next few years.

Australia bowled out for 236

Australia’s innings never flourished despite Matt Renshaw’s fluent 56, as India’s bowlers—spearheaded by Harshit Rana’s incisive 4/39—bowled with precision and intensity to dismiss them for 236. Marsh and Head provided a solid start, but tight spin in the middle overs and exceptional fielding stifled momentum.

Kohli’s sharp catch and Shreyas Iyer’s diving effort highlighted India’s energy, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar struck crucial blows. Renshaw battled smartly for his half-century, relying on rotation of strike, yet fell LBW to Sundar. Australia’s tail added brief resistance before India’s disciplined effort wrapped up the innings.
