Power outages impact thousands in Salem amid heavy rain and wind

Power was restored to nearly all homes and businesses in Salem by Saturday evening following widespread outages, Portland General Electric’s outage map showed.

Thousands are without power in south Salem amid high winds and rain.

Power outages began Saturday afternoon and affected nearly 7,000 Salem residences at their height, according to Portland General Electric’s outage map.

Outages in south Salem are affecting just over 4,000 residences in the areas of Kuebler Boulevard and Sunnyside Road. The Kuebler outage was caused by a fallen tree, while the other outage is still under investigation. 

The south Salem outages are expected to be restored by 1:45 a.m. Sunday.

An east Salem outage reported just after 1 p.m. affected nearly 3,000 residences about five miles east of downtown, the outage map showed. Power was restored to the area around 3 p.m.

Dispatch records continue to show multiple reports of downed wires across Salem.

Winds are expected to peak around 3 p.m. Saturday, blowing from the southwest at 21 miles per hour with gusts up to 37 miles per hour, then continuing at 11 to 20 miles per hour through the night. Showers will continue through the evening, with a chance of thunderstorms before 1 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
