A 56-year-old British holidaymaker has tragically died in the Canary Islands after a hotel railing ‘gave way’, causing him to fall nearly 20ft.
Another tourist, aged 54, was seriously injured in the same incident at the Costa Teguise resort in Lanzarote.
The 56-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while the other victim was rushed to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in a critical condition.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1.30am on Saturday morning (October 25), with emergency services alerted to two people having fallen from a ‘considerable height’ within a hotel.
The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), local police and Spanish Civil Guard were dispatched to the scene, according to the Mirror.
Local reports suggest that the faulty railing was located in an elevated area of the hotel complex.

The Civil Guard has launched an investigation to determine if there was negligence in the upkeep of the railing or in the hotel’s security measures.
A Foreign Office spokesperson told the Mirror: “We are providing support to the family of a British man who has died and to the family of a British man who has been injured in Spain.”
In August, a British tourist on holiday in Spain was left with horrifying injuries after he fell off a hotel balcony.
The holidaymaker, aged 22, fell from the third floor of the building in Ibiza at around 8pm on August 18, suffering injuries to his chest and head.
The incident unfolded at the Marco Polo hotel in the party resort of San Antonio.
