Everton’s search for a striker still on, hints David Moyes

Everton’s search for a striker could still be on after David Moyes hinted at the same in his pre-match press conference before facing Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.

The Toffees signed Thierno Barry for £27.6M from Villarreal this season but the 23-year-old French striker is yet to open his goal-scoring account. Meanwhile, Beto, who finished last season on a high note, has been disappointing as well and has scored just once in the Premier League so far.

The position of the Number 9 is becoming a concern for Moyes as both the Blues’ strikers have been goal-shy. Asked about the same, Moyes said, “It is difficult to buy strikers. Name the strikers who you can get, I can say that to you.

“You think you will come up with someone. But I will tell you why I wouldn’t be able to get them, or why they wouldn’t want to come here.

“Age or money or something, there would be a reason. Behind the scenes, we are not stupid, we try to get what we think we can. Strikers, honestly, for years at West Ham I could not find one.

“We got one every year, Gianluca (Scamacca) found it really tough and he was Italy’s No 9. But the three we have playing the way we are, we would have taken that. We cannot fix it all in one window. We probably were not attractive to do that either.

“I hope we can find goals from Thierno and get some from Beto, the other boys are creative.”

While Moyes didn’t explicitly mention that they are looking to bring in a new striker, he’s hinted at the possibility to add more quality to the squad beyond what was possible to do in one transfer window.

Let’s make sure he’s not another loose cannon, another poor attitude, another one for the future.

If the price is right… “Come on down, Richarlison, Gabriel Jesus, Joshua Zirkzee or anyone else who is peripheral to their squads”!

Toney would be a brilliant shout.

Jim @ 1, a loose canon, or a tight blunderbuss, (Beto/Barry) both fit the bill !

Christy, don’t get your hopes up.

Toney is on £400k a week, plus performance bonuses for another £100k.

“So, Ivan Toney, what first attracted you to Everton after earning mega bucks in Saudi Arabia?”

Sorry, I don’t know where he plays.

Say it in a Mrs Merton voice… not going to happen.

Angus #2. Have you read the piece on TW by Angus ‘Would Richarlison be a good fit for Everton’? Interesting read.

He makes a valid point that Richarlison did best last time as one of two strikers, feeding off Calvert-Lewin’s knock-downs, and not so well as a lone striker, here or at Spurs.

Therefore, who does Moyes drop in order to accommodate him and get the best from him?

Is Mr Moyes with this outburst trying to get the two current choices as striker to try harder or fill them with confidence?

I’d have preferred he’d have spoken about the type of striker he might want (cue smart arse reply; one who scores) or possible changes to style of play or personnel rather than what seems Moyes’s preference of a big target man, one option being that mentioned here quite often, the false Number 9.

Is Richarlison even an out-and-out striker?

I never once looked at him in his 4 years with us and looked at him that way; he was always a wide forward really that helped himself to a decent tally per season… but whether he’s still at that level now I’m not sure.

If Moyes insists on trying to find a ready-made striker without a big budget, he will continue to stockpile mediocre strikers. Scamacca, whom he mentions, was very predictably a failure in the Premier League.

Our best striker by a mile in the Premier League era is Lukaku and in today’s money he would have cost about £70M to £90M.

Without such a budget, we need to bring in a variety of options — players with talent who can develop.

This is for example what Eintract Frankfurt have been doing of late with the likes of Jovic, Ekitike, Marmoush and now Uzun, Burkhart and Wahi as the next in line. They always go for technical ability and potential — even if the player has a patchy goalscoring record.

Beto simply doesn’t have the right level of ability. Barry is worth persevering with — but in my view, we should be bringing in about 2 versatile and highly technical players to support him or give us different options. This is much more doable and will benefit the team longer term than trying to coax Toney away from a good team in Saudi and eking about 5 or 6 goals out of him in half a season on loan.
