What Is the NFL Single Game Sack Record? Browns’ Myles Garrett Trying To Make History vs. Patriots

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has been a monster on Sunday at Gillette Stadium when he’s been in the face of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye all game long.
In fact, Garrett, with the Patriots winning 32-13, totaled five sacks. There was still time left in the game to add more sacks to his count, but it didn’t happen. He finished with five sacks on the day.

What Is the NFL Single Game Sack Record?
Garrett was closing in on the NFL single-game record for sacks. The record holder is the late Kansas City Chiefs player Derrick Thomas, who recorded seven sacks against the Seattle Seahawks on November 11, 1990.
Garrett has been a monster on defense all game long. It’s going to take a big effort from the Patriots’ offensive line to keep him from either tying or breaking Thomas’ record on Sunday.

Garrett was a No. 1 overall pick by the Browns back in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. He’s been the best player for Cleveland throughout his career. There’s still some time left in Sunday’s game against the Patriots for him to add to his sack total.
What’s interesting to note is that Garrett entered Sunday’s game with five total sacks. So, in one game against the Patriots, he’s equaled that amount. He also entered the game with 16 total tackles. As the Browns hoped to have a great game against the Patriots, it didn’t happen on Sunday.

With the cameras focusing on the Browns’ sidelines late in the game, Garrett threw his helmet down. He looked incredibly frustrated about something, whether it was about a play or something else. Heading into Week 8, the Browns’ defense ranked fifth in the league based on PFSN’s Defense Impact metric.
Garrett played his heart out against New England. But the Browns’ offense, behind quarterback Dillon Gabriel, could not get going against the Patriots’ defense. Garrett has seen plenty of losing seasons with the Browns. He probably hoped that Gabriel would boost Cleveland after the team traded former starter Joe Flacco away to the Cincinnati Bengals.
But it was not to happen on Sunday at all. Cleveland will fall to 2-6 overall in the 2025 NFL season, so the Browns’ defense will look at the tape and see what happened. Garrett is the anchor of Cleveland’s defense, always pushing to improve week after week. With another loss, though, Cleveland will see what Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski can fix before next week’s game.
