Mexican Grand Prix 2025 live: ‘Tape gate’ drama returns in wild race start

Oscar Piastri’s lead in the F1 drivers’ championship is under threat and set to completely evaporate at the Mexican Grand Prix on Monday morning (AEDT).
His McLaren teammate Lando Norris, is in the form of his life, blitzing qualifying on Sunday and is on track to win the race in Mexico City and take the championship lead.
Piastri struggled in qualifying and only managed to finish eighth fastest, leaving him plenty of work to do in the race.

Piastri’s other title rival, Max Verstappen, who has won three of the last four races, has stormed into title contention after claiming as many points (119) as both McLaren drivers combined since the summer break.

The drivers’ championship could be turned on its head in Mexico, with Piastri only holding a narrow 14-point lead.
If Norris can replicate anything like he did in practice and qualifying, he could lead the championship with a healthy gap on his teammate if he is to take victory and Piastri finishes fifth or lower.
Red Bull’s Verstappen is 40 points adrift of Piastri and won’t be able to take the lead regardless of what happens on Monday.
