Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett has been left ‘heartbroken’ after announcing his dad took his own life.

Bennett, 21, was captain of United’s FA Youth Cup-winning team and remains at Old Trafford this season after spending last campaign on loan at Fleetwood Town in League Two.

The young defender has been given compassionate leave by the club and United are providing pastoral care for the youngster after he announced the shocking passing of his dad.

In an Instagram post with four images of him and his father and family, Bennett wrote: “Dad, I never thought I’d have to write this so soon, over the weekend I found out that he’d took his own life.

“Broken, devastated, just don’t want to believe it’s real but the sad reality is that it is, from driving me here, there and everywhere as a kid to watching me fulfil my dream of becoming a professional footballer.

“I love you in this life and the next.

“Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, please speak up, you don’t realise how much you are truly loved.”

Bennett captained the United side featuring Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho to their first FA Youth Cup win in 11 years back in 2022.

The Carrington graduate was named as an unused substitute in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham in December 2023 and played for the first-team during their 2024 pre-season tour of the US.

Bennett played in the EFL Trophy defeat to Lincoln City last month and in the Premier League International Cup U21 win over Athletic Club.
