Thousands without power in Anchorage, Mat-Su due to load shedding event

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Thousands of customers in Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough were without power Monday morning.
As of 9:40 a.m., Chugach Electric Association stated in a social media post that a load-shedding event is impacting thousands of customers across the city.
“Early indications are that both Chugach and MEA lost generation causing the cascading outages across our service territories. Additional generation resources are being brought on line and we are coordinating power restoration. Thank you for your patience,” the CEA posted.
CEA reported that at 10:15 a.m., power has been restored to all members impacted.
Around the same time, the Matanuska Electric Association reported that more than 19,000 customers were impacted by the power outage. They also stated on social media that the power outage was due to a load-shedding event.
As of 10:41 a.m., power should be restored to MEA customers.
Homer Electric Association also reported an outage Monday morning at 9:45 a.m. They reported that around 9,400 customers were affected. They believe the outage is due to a load-shedding event caused by a power plant in Anchorage tripping offline.
As of 10:15 a.m., all circuits were restored, according to HEA.
Load-shedding is a type of power load management meant to prevent a grid from overloading.
In a similar power outage last year, Julie Hasquet, Chugach Electric Communications manager, said load-shedding is a great tool for them to manage the situation when major generation goes offline.
“In this instance, it affected Chugach and MEA, we both shed the load at the same time, which allows us to then stabilize the system, figure out what the problem is, and start bringing people back up. So absolutely, the load-shedding plan and program worked as it should and prevented a larger event,” Hasquet said at the time.
The Anchorage School District sent a notice out stating that as of 10 a.m., half of its schools are experiencing a power outage. They did reaffirm on social media that all generators at these schools are functioning properly.
This is a developing story.
