Penguins vs. Blues: The matchup

The Penguins are off to a 6-2-1 start through nine games, and they sit second in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division with 13 points, trailing only the red-hot New Jersey Devils (8-1-0). Pittsburgh had a four-game win streak snapped by the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-4) in a shootout Saturday night and had to settle for one point, when Evgeni Malkin’s attempt went wide left to give the Blue Jackets a 3-2 edge in the extra session. That result all but negated a late comeback attempt where the Penguins trailed 4-2 late in the third period, but forced the shootout with a power play goal by Kris Letang at 14:54 and the game-tying score by Bryan Rust at 16:54.

Visitors or not, the Blues are favorites (-120) in the betting line for Monday night’s matchup. St. Louis enters a new week sitting last in the West’s Central Division with a 3-4-1 record and on a three-game losing streak. Last time out, the Blues fell on the road to the Detroit Red Wings (6-4) on Saturday, marking 13 goals allowed over their past two contests, including a 7-4 loss to Utah on Thursday. St. Louis is allowing the second-most goals in the NHL (4.13) and has the lowest team save percentage (.850).
