Michael Vick’s mother, Brenda, thinks back to Thanksgiving last year, just before the family’s mood began to shift. The former NFL quarterback had returned to Newport News, Virginia, for a cousin’s funeral just before the holiday, but by the time the day arrived, sadness had shifted toward optimism after Vick received an offer to become the football coach at Norfolk State, one of the area’s historically Black universities.
