James Bond fans furious over Amazon’s alterations to classic films

Fans of the James Bond franchise have expressed frustration as Amazon appears to have implemented numerous modifications to their beloved iconic films in the 007 series.

Following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM Studios in 2022, the streaming giant secured distribution rights to the 007 franchise, and supporters have since observed significant changes.

The modifications and adjustments to legendary Bond sequences encompass redesigned posters, pre-viewing content advisories, and a complete reimagining of the series from the ground up.

While the alterations for the upcoming TV series haven’t been entirely verified, several defining characteristics of James Bond and his suave demeanor are reportedly being eliminated as the new series distances itself from the traditional films.

Among the most striking modifications to the James Bond franchise occurred when Amazon Prime Video substituted original James Bond movie posters with revised editions that electronically eliminated or trimmed the legendary firearm from photographs of the secret agent.

Bond enthusiasts also criticized Amazon earlier this month after nearly every installment in the Bond franchise received content advisories before being made available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

Traditional Bond pictures, such as Dr No, now display viewer notifications informing audiences about “violence, alcohol use, smoking, and foul language.”

Further films carry advisories regarding “nudity and sexual content.”

Nevertheless, it has been observed that a contentious sequence from the 1967 film You Only Live Twice, showing Sean Connery modifying his appearance with makeup to resemble a Japanese individual, contains no racial sensitivity advisories. Social media users have voiced their frustration with these warnings, with one posting on X, “We don’t need trigger warnings on anything. Stop mollycoddling humans. Let them watch and switch off if they don’t enjoy it.”

Another user wrote, “When did people in the UK become so weak and feeble that a few words and jokes on old TV shows and films can bring them out in a sweat?”.

However, one viewer offered a different perspective, commenting, “As long as they aren’t making any changes to the actual movies, I don’t really see a problem.”

The modifications arrive as Amazon is confirmed to be rebooting the James Bond franchise from the ground up, bringing on board Dune director Denis Villeneuve alongside Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

The alterations for the new installment haven’t been confirmed and with no set release date in sight, but iconic elements of the 007 character are thought to be getting eliminated.

Bond’s signature martini, cigarette habit, and Walther PPK are all being reconsidered as the new Amazon approach takes Bond in a fresh direction.

However, no official modifications have been announced, leaving fans to speculate whether their beloved characteristics about the British spy will survive.
