Ice Chips: Canadiens place D Trudeau on waivers

Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens have placed defenceman William Trudeau on waivers for the purpose of a loan to the AHL’s Laval Rocket.
Trudeau started the season injured dating back to training camp and remained on the roster while recovering.
A fourth-round pick (113th overall) by Montreal in 2021, Trudeau had five goals and 19 points in 68 games last season with Laval, his third with the team.
He re-signed with the Canadiens on a one-year, $775,000 contract on July 3.

Forwards Kirby Dach and Brendan Gallagher did not practise today (therapy day), per TSN’s Kenzie Lalonde.
The Canadiens aren’t in action again until Saturday night against the Senators. They are coming off a four-game road trip against Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Seattle, where they went 3-1.
The team also announced that goaltender Samuel Montembeault will start on Saturday.
The 29-year-old has struggled this season, going 2-3 in five appearances with an .842 save percentage and 3.82 GAA.
In 2024-25, he appeared in a career-high 62 games with 31 wins.
Montreal also loaned prospect defenceman David Reinbacher to the AHL’s Laval Rocket.
Reinbacher, the fifth-overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft, was out for four weeks after breaking a bone in his hand during a preseason contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Winnipeg Jets
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will get the start at home tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks, per Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press.
Hellebuyck, the reigning Hart and Vezina trophy winner, is 5-3 with a .926 save percentage and 2.26 GAA in eight appearances this season.
Per McIntyre, captain Adam Lowry is in a regular sweater while Cole Perfetti and Dylan Samberg are in no-contact jerseys.
Forwards Brad Lambert and Nikita Chibrikov as well as defenceman Colin Miller look to be healthy scratches.

Ottawa Senators
Defenceman Jordan Spence is in the lineup tonight after skating on the third pair alongside Tyler Kleven at practice this morning.
Spence, who was acquired in the off-season from the Los Angeles Kings, has appeared in just four games for Ottawa this season.
He has been scratched the past five games with his best performance of the season being in a 8-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 15, where he notched three assists.
The Senators, who are coming off a 7-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, host the Calgary Flames, who are 2-8-1 so far this season.
Forward Kurtis MacDermid also draws back into the lineup with defenceman Nikolas Matinpalo and forward Olle Lycksell sitting tonight.

Goaltender Linus Ullmark gets the start in net for Ottawa, per Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch.
Ullmark, 32, is 4-4-1 with an .858 save percentage and 3.44 goals-against average this season.
San Jose Sharks
Rookie forward Michael Misa draws out of the lineup tonight as the team faces the New Jersey Devils, per NBC’s Sheng Peng.
First-year defenceman Sam Dickinson is in along with Shakir Mukhamadullin while goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic gets the start. Defenceman Vincent Desharnais will sit.
Misa, the second overall pick in the 2024 draft, has appeared in six games for the Sharks this season, scoring one goal with two assists.

Washington Capitals
Forward Dylan Strome and defenceman Rasmus Sandin are both on the ice for practice in no-contact jerseys.
Strome, who is dealing with a lower-body injury, missed Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to the Dallas Stars after getting injured against the Senators on Oct. 25 that caused him to leave the game.
The 28-year-old has two goals and eight assists this season.

Sandin has missed the past three games with an upper-body injury and was placed on injured reserve Monday.
He last played on Oct. 21 against the Seattle Kraken, where he had 15:01 minutes of ice time.
Forward Ethen Frank was also placed on injured reserve Thursday.
Frank was injured on Tuesday against Dallas when he ran into Stars forward Mikko Rantanen. He needed help off the ice after the hit and did not return to the game.
Carolina Hurricanes
Rookie goaltender Brandon Bussi was the first of the three Hurricanes goalies off the ice at morning skate after occupying the starter’s net and is in line to start against the New York Islanders tonight, per Newsday’s Andrew Gross.
Bussi, 27, has appeared in three games with Carolina this season, going 2-1 with a .911 save percentage and 2.33 GAA.
An undrafted free agent after three years at Western Michigan in the NCAA, Bussi spent four years in the Boston Bruins organization, primarily playing with the AHL’s Providence Bruins.

Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy was the first goaltender off the ice at the morning skate and is expected to start tonight against the Dallas Stars.
Vasilevskiy, 31, has an .893 save percentage and 2.86 GAA in seven appearances this season along with a 2-3-2 record.
