Explaining Kate Garraway’s “few years of being sad” – and how the Celebrity Traitors has helped her

As we race close to the finish line of The Celebrity Traitors, the time has come for the final few contestants to reflect on their time in the castle.

And while the remaining celebrities discussed their experiences while around the dinner table in Thursday night’s episode, it was Kate Garraway who became the most introspective, and revealed that playing the game had helped her recover from “quite a few years recently of being quite sad”.

It’s rather an understatement for the TV broadcaster, whose husband, Derek Draper, died in January 2024. The couple had been married since 2005, but after Derek – a political lobbyist – contracted Covid in 2020, he was hospitalised in a critical condition until March 2021.

When Kate gave an update of his health that month, she explained that he had a severe case of complications from long Covid, and told The Sunday Times that he “may never recover” and could have “no quality of life” . However, Derek returned to their North London home on a trial basis in April 2021; he had a heart attack in December 2023, however, and sadly Kate announced he had died in January 2024.

On an Instagram post at the time, she wrote: “Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”

So, if anyone deserves a bit of levity in their life, it was Kate, which is what she explained made participating in The Celebrity Traitors such a tonic for her. Telling her fellow contestants, she said: “I feel like I’ve learnt lots from all of you in different ways. I mean, sorry if it sounds a bit naff, but I feel a bit inspired, I feel like I’ve laughed so much.

“I think I’ve had quite a few years recently of being quite sad and have to be quite controlled and inward looking and you’ve all made me feel a bit like I’m looking out.” Even though Kate hasn’t made it through to next week’s final, she’s won the game in her own, personal way.
