Marvel Has Officially Recast Chris Hemsworth’s Thor & I’m Still Not Over It

Thor is played by a different actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest project, and I wish we could have seen Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder for a major reason. The MCU’s original Avengers are easily among the most beloved heroes in the franchise. Given their long tenure, the heroes have been part of many of the MCU’s best movies.
With the creation of Disney+, multiple original Avengers have appeared in the MCU’s TV shows. That has happened in live-action, with Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton leading a Hawkeye series, and animation, where all the original Avengers have appeared in some form. It is through the latter that a multiverse series recast Thor, and I wanted to see what Hemsworth could have done in the show.
Chris Hemsworth Does Not Return As Thor In The MCU’s Last 2025 Release
The MCU’s 2025 projects came to an end with the TV-MA Marvel Zombies. The multiverse series continued the storyline set up by the What If…? season 1 episode, “What If… Zombies?!” Marvel Studios brought back several MCU stars to voice their characters, including the likes of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch, and more.
Sadly, Chris Hemsworth did not return to voice Thor, with Greg Furman taking over the role. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 voice actor did a good job as Thor, but given that Hemsworth voiced Thor in What If…?, his Marvel Zombies absence was baffling. With an exciting story that had Thor in an important role, the recasting was noteworthy.
Marvel Zombies Would Have Given Chris Hemsworth An Exhilarating Thor Story
Thor stands out in Thor: love and thunder
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Marvel Zombies. In Marvel Zombies, Thor has an Avengers: Infinity War-like entrance to fight zombie Thanos, being left with half of his body scarred. Years later, the God of Thunder is shown to have kept quiet all this time, depressed that he could not kill Thanos and was left with the scars of his failure to save the world.
Thor later comes to his senses to take on the Scarlet Witch and her undead army single-handedly, allowing Ms. Marvel and her team to escape and try to save Earth. Marvel Zombies gave Thor a better depression arc than the joked-about “fat Thor” in Avengers: Endgame, and I wanted to see Hemsworth work with that more serious material for the character.
I’m Glad We Will Not Have To Wait Long For Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Return
While Thor was recast for the MCU’s latest project, I’m glad that we will not have to wait long at all to see Hemsworth back onscreen as the hero. After all, he was the first name announced for the cast of Avengers: Doomsday during Marvel’s big live-stream reveal. That, and his status as an original Avenger, suggest a big role.
Avengers: Doomsday will also see the MCU return of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. As such, Thor should be reunited with his brother for the first time since the original Loki was killed by Thanos. That is the same kind of heavy, serious material that Hemsworth could have worked with in Marvel Zombies, even more so, making up for Thor‘s recast.
