The sixth series of Channel 5 favourite All Creatures Great and Small came to an end with an emotional episode.

Tristan opened up in moving scenes in All Creatures Great and Small

All Creatures Great and Small fans were left “sobbing” as the series wrapped with a “heartbreaking” episode that saw Tristan break down as he talked about the war.

The Channel 5 period drama, which chronicles the life of Yorkshire vet James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph), returned for its sixth series last month and came to an end on Thursday (October 30) with a moving instalment in which Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) finally talked about his experiences during the war and the story behind his Military Cross.

It had viewers in floods of tears, with many posting messages on X (formerly Twitter) saying they were “devastated” and “sobbing” over the moving scenes.

In the episode, Tristan appeared to panic as he tended to an ill horse, fleeing as his brother Siegfried (Samuel West) looked on. Siegfried and Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) later found him alone in the church.

He told his older brother: “We were moving camp when we came under fire. I was with Billy. I was always with Billy. We’d been inseparable since training. There was this noise. Billy just goes up, seems like he’d been hit, he was in a bad way. I didn’t fully grasp what had happened so I went to help him and he screamed at me, he screamed not to move an inch.”

When Siegfried asked if it was a mine, Tristan said it was the entire field.

“There was no medic, so I did what I could to help,” he said. “It was a mine right next to me. If Billy hadn’t screamed, then… I got a medal because I managed to save a few chaps but Billy wasn’t one of them. He saved me, but I couldn’t save him.”

Fans sobbed as Tristan opened up to Siegfried

“Am fully sobbing my eyes out, my poor boy,” one tearful fan posted on X as the scene unfolded, as another agreed: “I can’t stop crying. Tristan’s story was so heartbreaking. Callum was out of this world with his acting, my God.”

“He portrayed the struggle of people returning from war so well!” said someone else, as another viewer confessed: “This show has officially broketh me.”

“Can’t stop crying,” admitted another viewer.

“What a beautiful, heartbreaking scene that was,” commented someone else.

Another fan remarked: “You’re breaking my heart I’m crying so much I can’t see the screen.”

“Perhaps the most moving scene in the entirety of this beautiful show,” said someone else.

The series has been a huge hit with fans

The latest series of the TV favourite has seen James and his team dealing with a range of animal ailments, while Tristan has been getting close to Charlotte Beauvoir (Gaia Wise).

Meanwhile, Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) and Siegfried’s slow-burn possible romance has continued to unfold.

All Creatures Great and Small airs on Channel 5.
