Victor Wembanyama stuffs stat sheet to ignite Spurs to first-ever 5-0 start

For the first time in the franchise’s storied history, the San Antonio Spurs are 5-0.

Led by Victor Wembanyama’s season-high 18 rebounds, along with 27 points, six assists and five blocks, the Spurs beat the red-hot Miami Heat 107-101, pulling away late in the game after Miami had rallied from a double-digit deficit.

Wembanyama supplied the signature sequence in the Spurs’ finishing kick, swatting Miami guard Davion Mitchell’s drive to the rim, then taking the ball coast to coast for an off-footed bank shot.

He revealed his intensity late in the game after he got hammered on a drive with 14.6 seconds left, getting up to ignite the crowd in the face of “Wem-V-P” chants.

After the game ended, Wembanyama screamed as he high-fived courtside fans and celebrated with his teammates. As he went on the Jumbotron for the post-game interview, he gathered all of his teammates to join him, a sign of how strong the chemistry has been with this team all season.

Despite the absence of former All-Star De’Aaron Fox, who is expected to make his season debut soon after recovering from a hamstring strain, the Spurs are off to their strongest start ever because of their aggressive guard play and Wembanyma’s inevitable dominance.

After a declarative opening-night performance in Dallas, when he scored 40 points against one of the NBA’s best frontcourts, Wembanyama has not played with quite the same level of consistent ferocity and control. But his massive size advantage and improved feel on the ball have allowed him to chip away at defenses over the course of these nights and routinely finish with some of the best statistical performances in the league.

His defense has also been crucial, as he’s constantly deterred drivers and blocked shots out of nowhere. On Thursday, Wembanyama passed 15-year veteran Danny Green for ninth place on the Spurs’ all-time blocks list with 451. Wembanyama is only 122 games into his career.

But he hasn’t done this alone. Defending rookie of the year Stephon Castle has been one of the league’s most aggressive perimeter defenders this season, while 2025 No. 2 pick Dylan Harper has been a revelation coming off the bench. Veteran Keldon Johnson has thrived in a sixth-man role, while sixth-year wing Devin Vassell has looked healthy for the first time in several seasons.

With Fox, versatile forward Jeremy Sochan, backup bigs Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk, and sharpshooter Lindy Waters III all expected to make returns from injury in the coming weeks, the team has plenty of reinforcements coming.
