AFL great gets brutally dumped by own club

Port Adelaide premiership winning captain Warren Tredrea has been removed from the club’s board.

At a meeting on Friday, the Power board decided to axe Tredrea from the board of directors following a lengthy investigation into comments made by a guest on his podcast earlier this year.

The investigation centred around an interview Tredrea had on his podcast ‘The Ballsy Show’ in May with British army veteran AJ Roberts.

The Jewish Council of Australia condemned Roberts’ comments regarding Israel and the 9/11 terror attacks, claiming the podcast episode was an “amplification of far-right antisemitic conspiracy theories”.

Roberts referred to Israel as a “fake state” created by “the same Zionists who were controlling World War II”.

Tredrea sought to “make clarification to the media coverage” regarding his interview with Roberts on May 20, writing on social media at the time: “I am not in any way, shape, or form, an antisemite.”

The 46-year-old joined Port Adelaide’s board in February last year and his term was due to expire at the end of 2026.

The other members of the Power’s board are David Koch (chairman), Jamie Restas (deputy chairman), Kevin Osborn, Cos Cardone, Holly Ransom, Greg Columbus, Tara Page and George Fiacchi.

In a statement, the Power said: “Amongst other things, the Board formally requested that Mr Tredrea agree to a Club Statement which included an apology to the Club and anyone who took offence to the comments made on his podcast by Mr AJ Roberts.

“Mr Tredrea refused to agree with the public apology request to close out the matter. The Board has afforded Mr Tredrea numerous opportunities to reconsider his position, which he has not changed.

“After exhausting all reasonable avenues for resolution, the Board determined that Mr Tredrea’s continuation as a Director was not in the best interests of the Club.

“With the support of the AFL, the process was implemented in accordance with the Corporations Act and the Club’s Constitution.

“The Board prides itself on operating in a collaborative and productive way to best deliver outcomes to the Club and its members. Where these values cannot be upheld, good governance requires appropriate action to be taken.

“The Board wishes to make clear: this is a governance matter relating to its expectations of Club Directors.

“It is not, and should never be interpreted as, a reflection on Warren Tredrea’s extraordinary contribution to Port Adelaide as a player. Warren Tredrea is a Premiership captain, Club Champion, and one of the greatest players to represent the Club.

“His legacy as a player is secure and will forever be celebrated by this Club and our members. That legacy remains untarnished and separate from this governance decision.”

Tredrea captained Port Adelaide’s only AFL premiership winning side in 2004 and is the Power’s all-time leading goalkicker, as well as a four-time club best and fairest.

“I started this podcast series as a result of some personal and professional developments in my life over the last few years — private matters which have played out in a public forum,” Tredrea said in his social media statement in May.

“Those matters have made me sceptical, and even cynical, about big government, big business and big media.

“The purpose of my podcast has been not to shine a light on my own personal views and opinions, but rather to provide a platform for others to present their views and opinions in an unfiltered forum.

“I understand some of these may be uncomfortable for some to listen to.

“I was attracted to interviewing Mr. Roberts because he was a veteran who has fought for his country, seen ugly things in battle, and now is sceptical of the government he fought in the name of. Over the last few years, I have found many veterans who share similar scepticism about their governments following service for their country.

“Let me make it abundantly clear. I unequivocally condemn war and genocide, and seek only to share other perspectives of what has been a very one way reported narrative in the mainstream media.

“I am not in any way, shape, or form, an antisemite, and consider it defamatory for anyone to accuse me as such.”

Tredrea’s position on the Power’s board also came under scrutiny after he made some bizarre comments in his court case with his former employer Channel 9.

He had sought almost $6 million in lost wages from Channel 9 after he was sacked from his role as a TV sports presenter on 9News Adelaide in 2021 following a very public Covid-19 vaccine saga. Tredrea was ordered to pay all Channel 9’s legal costs.

Tredrea lost the trial and was ordered to pay costs between $100,000 and $200,000 for a failed appeal.

But Tredrea told the Federal Court on he could not pay legal costs because he doesn’t believe in Australian legal tender and would have to repay his former employer in precious metal.

Representing himself Tredrea claimed there isn’t sufficient gold or silver to cover Nine’s legal costs, so he issued an IOU, a written promissory note.

“I believe only gold or silver coins in common circulation can pay a debt,” Tredrea said in court.

The former AFL great, who was representing himself, stated in court documents that he is a “private man” and not a “legal person, citizen or resident”, but he denied being a sovereign citizen.

“I answer to the name Warren Tredrea of South Australia, a private man, my yes be yes, my no be no,” Tredrea said in court.

“I am not an entity, legal person, citizen, resident or any form of creature of statute.

“I have not been provided with any material facts or evidence that shows there exists any lawful gold or silver coin of substance in common circulation upon which to close, pay and extinguish an account.

“I believe sincerely that none exists … I believe no gold or silver coin in circulation can pay a debt.”
