Come Friday, doorbell buttons all over the land will be worn out by the pressing fingers of pint-sized ghouls, ghosts, vampires and witches, as well as the occasional comic book superhero.

“Trick or treat,” they’ll shout, as they line up to claim their share of the sugary spoils. (Has anyone ever replied “trick”?) This is Halloween, American-style.
