Sanju Samson could not capitalise despite being promoted to India’s No 3 spot in the second T20I against Australia. The ace wicketkeeper batter was dismissed for 2 (4), trapped leg before by Nathan Ellis.
Sanju missed a length ball that caught him plumb above the knee roll. The review showed the ball was striking the middle stump.
Sanju had walked in at the dismissal of Shubman Gill for 5 (10), ahead of skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who had made the No 3 slot his own at the Asia Cup. In the continental event, Sanju had to bat at No 5 and sometimes as low as No 8 because the top order was congested.
At Melbourne, a surface traditionally known to be balanced, the Indian top order couldn’t cope with the pace and accuracy of the Aussies. Suryakumar (1) and Tilak Varma (0) too followed Sanju to the dugout, undone by the extra pace.
When Sanju came out to bat, he was 7 short of reaching 1,000 runs in T20Is. Now he needs five more to get to the milestone, and hopefully he will make it in the third T20I at Hobart on November 2.
