Phoenix Wraps Up Regular Season Against Tribe

ELON – The Elon University men’s soccer team (6-3-6, 3-1-3 CAA) plays its final match of the regular season Saturday night with a chance to win the CAA South Division, as the Phoenix welcomes William & Mary (2-9-4, 1-5-1) to Rudd Field.

The William & Mary Series 

  • Elon is 5-7-4 all-time against the Tribe but has won or tied in the five most recent matches in the series.  
  • The Phoenix and Tribe played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 20 in Williamsburg. Martin Kozak scored the first goal of the match in the 50th minute off a Jordin Wilson assist, but Sam Delgado evened the score in the 69th minute with a successful penalty kick.  
  • Elon is 3-3-2 against the Tribe at home, which includes wins in two of the last three meetings between the teams at Rudd.  
  • Since joining the CAA, Elon is 4-3-4 versus the Tribe.  
  • Elon’s last three victories against William & Mary have come by a 2-1 score.  

 

Last Time Out 

  • Elon dropped its first conference match of the season Saturday, falling 2-1 at Campbell. 
  • Ethan Roberts opened the scoring for Campbell in the first half before Filipe Matos added another goal in the 58th minute.  
  • Kozak tallied a goal on a penalty kick in the 89th minute but the Phoenix could not find an equalizer in the final minute of play.  
  • It was the first time this season Elon has conceded multiple goals in a match.  
  • The loss snapped a streak of eight straight wins or draws for Elon in regular season CAA matches. It was Campbell’s first victory against the Phoenix since joining the CAA. 

 

CAA Scenarios 

  • Elon currently sits alone in second in the CAA South Division standings with 12 points after going 3-13 in in its first seven conference clashes. The Phoenix is two points behind first-place Campbell. 
  • The Camels have no CAA games remaining, meaning Elon can still clinch the CAA South Division title and the division’s No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament on Saturday night with a victory against William & Mary. 
  • The Phoenix is currently tied for second in the division with UNCW, who can still win the South with a win Sunday against Charleston and an Elon loss or tie versus the Tribe.  
  • Elon has earned a win or tie against the other four South Division teams. The Phoenix has already played UNCW (2-0-0), Charleston (1-0-1) and Campbell (0-1-1) two times on the season.   

 

Home Sweet Rudd 

  • The Phoenix will look to cap off an undefeated regular season at Rudd on Saturday. 
  • Elon enters Saturday with a 4-0-3 record at home, which includes a pair of conference victories against Charleston and UNCW.  
  • The Phoenix has not conceded a goal in any of its seven home contests. UNCG is the only opponent to reach double-digit shots against Elon at Rudd this season.  
  • Elon last went unbeaten at home in 1988. This would be the first time for the Phoenix going undefeated at home as a Division I program.  

 

Top Drawer Recognition 

  • Majaliwa Msabaha and Jackson Leavitt both earned spots on October’s Top Drawer Soccer Midseason Watchlist.   
  • Msabaha checked in at No. 33 with Leavitt ranked No. 39. They were the two highest ranked players from the CAA in the ranking and two of just three overall from the conference, along with Hofstra’s Laurie Goddard.   
  • Msabaha has played 1,313 of a possible 1,350 minutes in 15 matches this season, the most minutes by an Elon field player. The senior defender and preseason All-CAA selection has helped Elon to nine clean sheets on the season.  
  • Leavitt has started every match in goal for the Phoenix this season and ranks No. 8 nationally in goals against average (.467). The graduate student has 40 saves on the campaign to backstop the CAA’s top scoring defense.  

 

Defense, Defense, Defense 

  • Elon has allowed just seven goals through its first 15 matches. The Phoenix has posted nine clean sheets on the season, including a stretch of four in a row that came to an end on Sept. 20 at William & Mary.   
  • Elon is tied for sixth in the country in shutout percentage (0.600). The Phoenix has posted shutouts in four of its seven conference matches, including three of the last four   
  • The Phoenix leads the CAA and is No. 6 nationally in goals against average (0.467). Elon has allowed six fewer goals than the next best CAA team.   
  • Leavitt has played every minute in goal this season for the Phoenix. He has made 40 saves and ranks No. 8 nationally in goals against average (.467) as well as No9 nationally in save percentage (.851). 
  • The Phoenix has yet to allow a goal in seven matches at Rudd this season, with seven of the team’s nine seven clean sheets coming at home.   
  • Msabaha has logged a team-best 1,313 minutes on Elon’s back line this season. Connor Mucchetti (1,261), Jonke (1,231), Kozak (1,156) and Carlos Levy (1,127) have also surpassed 1,000 minutes on the season.   
  • Elon has allowed just five of its first 15 opponents to reach double digit shot attempts in a game.   
  • On Oct. 13, Kitch earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week, becoming the second Elon player to earn the honor this season along with Leavitt. Kitch scored the game-winning goal for Elon against UNCW on Oct. 11 after logging the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw at No. 7 Duke on Oct. 7.   
  • Leavitt has earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week twice this season on Sept. 1 and 8.  

 

Kozak Contributing 

  • Kozak is pacing the Phoenix with 10 points this season (3g, 4a). He has scored or assisted on four of Elon’s last six goals.    
  • Kozak leads the Phoenix with four assists through the first 14 games this season, all of which he has started.  
  • The junior has the most points for the Phoenix in CAA play (7).    
  • Kozak is one of three Elon players, along with Mucchetti and Colin Veltri, with multiple assists on the season and has contributed on seven of Elon’s 12 goals as a team.   
  • Kozak is tied for the eighth most assists among CAA players this season.   

 

Renz The Rookie 

  • Dominik Renz has emerged as one of Elon’s top offensive producers in his debut campaign with the Phoenix.  
  • The redshirt sophomore is second on the team lead with seven points (3g, 1a) and had a four-game point streak earlier this season.   
  • All three of Renz’s goals this season have been game-winning tallies, including two against CAA opponents UNCW and College of Charleston. He ranks No. 2 in the conference in game-winning goals, trailing only Hofstra’s Goddard (6).   
  • Renz took home back-to-back CAA Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 1 and Sept. 8, becoming the first Elon player to win the weekly honor twice in a season since Scott Vatne in 2021.   
  • Renz has made 11 consecutive starts for the Phoenix and has played 65-plus minutes in 10 of the last 13 matches.   

 

New Look CAA Soccer 

  • Starting in 2025, the CAA will feature two divisions for men’s soccer – a North and South Division.    
  • Elon is part of the South Division alongside Campbell, College of Charleston, UNCW and William & Mary.    
  • The Phoenix will face the other four South Division teams twice during the regular season, with one game at home and one on the road.     
  • At the end of the regular season, the top three teams from each division will qualify for the CAA Championship. The top seed in each division will receive a bye to the semifinals while the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds in both the North and South will clash in the quarterfinals.    

 

Scouting William & Mary 

  • The Tribe enters Saturday’s regular season finale with a 2-9-4 record on the season and a 1-5-1 mark in CAA play. 
  • William & Mary was defeated by College of Charleston in its most recent outing last Saturday, 3-1.  
  • The Tribe’s lone CAA victory came against UNCW on Oct. 4.  
  • William & Mary has been outscored 40-12 on the season.  
  • Delgado leads the Tribe with six points this season. He is tied with Webb Kosich for the most goals (2) on the team. 
  • Diogo Branco is pacing the Tribe with three assists on the campaign. Delgado, Michael DiOrio and Evan Rabush all have two helpers this season.  
  • William & Mary has started three different goalkeepers this season. Ryan Eapen has made the most starts (9) but Karan Sobti has been the starter for the Tribe’s last two contests.  
  • Head coach Chris Norris is in his 22nd season leading the Tribe.
