Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux departs organization

Pitching coach Mike Maddux is departing the Texas Rangers organization again.
Maddux, 64, had spent the last three years as Bruce Bochy’s pitching coach, helping guide the Rangers to a World Series title in 2023 and to the best rotation ERA in baseball in 2025 at 3.41. He is expected to take on the same role with the Los Angeles Angels, according to a person with knowledge of the process.
The Rangers did not dismiss Maddux. The Rangers extended the opportunity to return under new manager Skip Schumaker. In addition, they discussed other potential roles, according to a person with direct knowledge of the hiring process.
“The Texas Rangers are forever grateful to Mike for his contributions here,” President of Baseball Operations Chris Young said in a statement. “Mike has played a major role for some of the best teams in Rangers history, including the franchise’s first World Series title in 2023. We wish him the best.”

It brings to the end Maddux’s second tour as the Rangers pitching coach. He also served under Ron Washington and Jeff Banister from 2009 through 2015 before leaving to take a similar role with the Washington Nationals.
After Maddux returned to join Bochy, which also coincided with the signings of Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom, the Rangers posted a 3.90 ERA from the starting rotation, which ranked fifth in MLB over a three-year period.
The decision for Maddux to leave four weeks after Schumaker was appointed to the managerial role puts the Rangers in a bit of a bind. They had four weeks of near exclusivity to put together a staff while other teams were still searching for new managers. Now, they find themselves another team fighting for guys who are available.
The Rangers do think highly of Jordan Tiegs, who came through the minor league system and was instrumental in the growth of the bullpen and some younger pitchers in 2025. He will likely take on a bigger role that could move him from the bullpen to the dugout.
One potential candidate that might be a fit for the Rangers: Mel Stottlemyre Jr., who served as Schumaker’s pitching coach with Miami in 2023-24. Schumaker inherited Stottlemyre, who had been with the Marlins since 2019, when he took over the job.
