1. Follow safety instructions

“For those celebrating at home, it’s crucial to build bonfires on flat surfaces, away from bushes, sheds, and overhead cables. Remove any flammable materials from the surrounding area and take the same precautions when using fireworks. Be sure to always follow the instructions and maintain a safe distance.

2. Be prepared

“There are laws against setting off fireworks in public spaces and on 5 November, the cutoff is at midnight. It’s important to know that breaking these laws can incur unlimited fines and up to six months in prison. And remember that accidents can happen, so it’s wise to be prepared. Keep a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket nearby and take a moment beforehand to learn how to use them properly.

3. Check your insurance

“Before inviting friends over for fireworks, check your home insurance coverage. Let guests know the potential risks and ensure you have liability cover, so you can enjoy the evening with peace of mind. Make sure your home and contents insurance are up to date.

4. Clean up safely

“Even after the fun is over, half-burnt fireworks and glowing embers can stay dangerous for hours. Cleaning up might feel like a chore, but it’s worth it for everyone’s safety. Make sure the fire is completely out, douse it with water and check your garden and street for leftover fireworks. Wear gloves and handle everything carefully to avoid accidents.

5. Keep watch

“People often don’t realise just how fast a fire can spread. It only takes a moment of distraction for things to get out of hand, so never leave a fire unattended. If you have kids or pets, think ahead about how to keep them safe, too. Home and contents insurance does not usually include pet cover, but in any case it’s best to keep your pets well away from fires and fireworks.

6. Lock up

“Whether you’re heading out to a bonfire or celebrating in your own back garden, the noise and excitement can be a distraction. Take a moment to make sure all doors and windows are locked before the festivities begin – even if you’re just next door. If anything’s stolen without signs of forced entry, your insurance company might not cover it.”
