The star — whose decades-long career includes award-winning turns in television, film, and theatre — looked completely transformed with a neatly trimmed, long grey beard, and a navy Tweed blazer.

The much-loved actor shot to fame for his unforgettable portrayal of Frank Gallagher in Channel 4’s Shameless, but looked worlds away from his scruffy alter ego.

David Threfall now stars as Bunny Munro Senior in the upcoming Sky Atlantic drama The Death of Bunny Munro, appearing alongside Matt Smith and Rafael Mathé, premiering on Sky on November 20.

The six-part series, based on Nick Cave’s 2009 novel, follows Matt Smith’s character, a sex-addicted door-to-door beauty product salesman who embarks on a chaotic road trip with his young son after his wife’s death.

A synopsis for the show reads: “Following his wife Libby’s death by suicide, sex-addicted, door-to-door beauty product salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro finds himself saddled with a young son and only a loose concept of parenting.

“Together with Bunny Junior he embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control road trip across southern England as the two struggle to contain their grief in very different ways.”

David became a household name through Shameless, which ran for 11 series from 2004 to 2013 and launched the careers of James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff, and Maxine Peake.

The Manchester-set drama went on to inspire a hit US remake starring William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum.

As the Gallagher family patriarch, Frank Gallagher was well known for his outbursts and drinking habits – but actor David couldn’t be further from the man he portrayed on screen.

The star has enjoyed major roles in Shakespeare plays and wider theatre, taking on parts including Oedipus, Macbeth, and Don Quixote.

On film, his credits include Hot Fuzz, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Master and Commander and Alien Autopsy.

In 2016 he also starred as Abel Croker in Ripper Street.

He has been married to Bosnian-British actress Brana Bajic since 1995, and the pair have two children.

Brana has appeared in British TV shows such as The Bill, Trial and Retribution and The Bletchley Circle.

Since then, David has appeared in a wide range of projects including Funny Woman, After Life, Troy, Dodger, and Code of a Killer, as well as films such as Nowhere Boy, and Black Sea with Jude Law.
