Former Lincoln City Keeper In Line For Shock England Call Up

Brennan Johnson and Morgan Rogers are the darlings of the international scene when it comes to former Imps, and if reports are to be believed, they might soon be joined by another name.

Former Imps loanee Carl Rushworth is being considered for an England call-up after a remarkable start to life at Coventry City. The 24-year-old, now starring for the Sky Blues in the Championship, has caught the eye of England scouts following a record-breaking run of form under Frank Lampard.

Rushworth’s Record-Breaking Start

Rushworth recently set a new club record, going 613 minutes without conceding a goal — the longest such streak in Coventry City’s history. His sharp reflexes, calm handling, and command of the area have been key to the Sky Blues’ unbeaten start to the campaign, as Lampard’s side sit proudly at the top of the table.

According to reports from talkSPORT, England manager Thomas Tuchel has been alerted to Rushworth’s form, and scouts have been in attendance at recent Coventry matches. While a call-up this year would still represent a surprise, his performances are beginning to make serious noise at national level.

From Lincoln To Coventry

Imps fans will remember Rushworth fondly from his 2022/23 season at the Bank, where he was one of the standout performers in Mark Kennedy’s full campaign. On loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, the young stopper’s maturity and shot-stopping ability earned widespread praise despite a mid-table finish for the Imps.

After a tougher spell at Hull City last season, Rushworth’s move to Coventry has reignited his career. Brighton blocked a summer loan to Rangers, reportedly due to owner Tony Bloom’s connections with Hearts, and that decision has worked out perfectly.

With Coventry flying and Rangers struggling, Rushworth has landed in the ideal environment to progress.

England Attention On The Rise

Rushworth’s fine form comes at a time when England’s goalkeeping landscape is shifting. With Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope both in their thirties, opportunities are emerging for younger contenders to stake a claim. Rushworth, who has represented England at Under-21 level, is quickly building a case to be next in line.

Lampard has already credited the Brighton loanee for his professionalism and leadership within a young Coventry side, describing him as “a calming presence who gives the whole back line confidence.” The Sky Blues’ defensive record, just nine goals conceded in twelve games, underlines that point.

What Comes Next?

With a permanent move to the CBS Arena being discussed, Rushworth’s future looks increasingly bright. For now, though, his focus will be on maintaining Coventry’s promotion push and continuing to impress those watching from St George’s Park.

For a former Imp who once honed his craft in front of the Stacey West Stand, the journey from Lincoln to potential home international recognition is quite a story, but one that is becoming more and more regular.
