TORONTO — Eight months and 13 days ago, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. declared publicly that he planned to keep his word. He told the Toronto Blue Jays he would not negotiate once the season started, and Feb. 18 was the beginning of spring training. So after one last 10:30 p.m. call with team officials, their opportunity to sign him to a contract extension and keep him from free agency this winter closed.
