Manchester United have changed for Benjamin Sesko – just ask Rasmus Hojlund

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has praised his old side for how they have handled summer signing Benjamin Sesko.
United signed Sesko from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for a fee which could rise to £73.7million. The Reds beat Champions League side Newcastle United to Sesko’s signature, with Arsenal also interested in the forward before opting to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting instead.
The 22-year-old striker endured a slow start to life at Old Trafford, with no goals in his first six appearances for Ruben Amorim’s team. But the Slovenian broke his duck against Brentford in September, before scoring again a week later against Sunderland.
Sesko went on to get his first assist for United in Saturday’s 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at M16. That victory over Fabian Hurzeler’s men was a third straight win for the Reds, who now sit in the European positions after nine games.
Sesko’s arrival in the Premier League came at the expense of Rasmus Hojlund, who struggled at United before leaving to join Napoli shortly after. Now, Saha, who scored 42 goals in a Reds shirt, has had his say on how the club have changed their approach with some of their stars after previous failures.
“What I really like is that we’re not making the same mistake we’ve made with Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho,” he said via Betvictor. “They were starting games with a certain status and had an immense responsibility to score.
“They need to be introduced game by game, understanding the principles, and if they don’t perform, they’ll be benched. Some of these moments are difficult to manage, while others are good. This will also apply to other players like Kobbie Mainoo or Mason Mount.
“No player deserves anything, and Benjamin Sesko is starting to understand that he will have to fight for his place. Every opportunity he gets off the bench, he has to perform as he did on the weekend.
“I think he did really well, he didn’t score, but he did his job confidence-wise. He was tracking back, and one day it will be rewarded. This is the type of introduction that hasn’t been done for maybe the last seven to eight years, which was a big mistake.”
Sesko’s next chance to get on the scoresheet will be in Saturday’s clash at Nottingham Forest (3pm kick-off). Victory at the City Ground would be United’s fourth consecutive victory – a feat they have not managed to achieve since February 2024.
