Liverpool will be hoping that a start of a new month will bring about a change of fortunes as they bid to snap a run of four straight Premier League defeats against Aston Villa at Anfield.

The Reds look a shadow of last season’s champions and may not get much sympathy from the Villans, who are on four-game winning streak in the top-flight and chasing a first win at Anfield since 2014.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa preview

It now reads six defeats in seven for Premier League champions Liverpool after manager Arne Slot chose to rest key players in the EFL Cup against Crystal Palace in midweek, and the pressure is on to seek some solace at home to an Aston Villa side who have their tails up.

The Reds have lost four straight Premier League matches to fall seven points off the title pace and plenty of criticism was thrown Slot’s way after his young team suffered a 3-0 defeat in the last 16 of the EFL Cup at home to Palace on Wednesday.

Influential figures Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai were among those left out but it could have been an opportunity to bolster confidence and instead Liverpool have come under even greater scrutiny.

Injuries are not helping matters and a quick glance at the bench will show that there is little in terms of impact if they are in need of that spark in a tight affair.

With Salah failing to fire and the Reds looking especially disjointed defensively – they have conceded 14 goals in nine league games – it is hard to see the tide turning soon and Villa should be filled with optimism.

It was a tough start to the season for Unai Emery’s side but four straight wins, including a dogged defensive display in last weekend’s 1-0 win at home to Manchester City, have moved them level on points with Liverpool.

Villa won 2-1 at Tottenham in their last away league fixture and, virtually at full strength, they have the resources to further dampen the mood on Merseyside.

Emery’s attacking players Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers should relish a test against the rusty Reds, who are lacking cohesion and looked like they could concede almost every time Brentford broke forward in last weekend’s dismal 3-2 defeat.

Salah out to enhance fine record against Villa

For his impeccably high standards, for one reason or another Salah has struggled to put his best foot forward, but he has an excellent record against Villa and may be able to bolster that with a goal.

Salah has nine goals in 13 meetings with the Villans for the Reds, scoring in four of their last five showdowns at Anfield, and his consolation goal at Brentford last Saturday should have given him a lift.

Free-scoring draw could trigger value

Three of the last five Premier League meetings between these sides have ended in score draws, including a four-goal thriller at Villa Park in February, and this could follow a similar narrative.

Liverpool are clearly vulnerable defensively and both teams have scored in eight of their last ten outings.

Mohamed Salah anytime goalscorer

The Egyptian has underwhelmed this season but a record of nine goals in 13 meetings with Aston Villa makes him dangerous to ignore.

Morgan Rogers to have one or more shots on target

The visitors should get plenty of shooting chances at Anfield and Morgan Rogers has hit the target three times in his last three league appearances.

Boubacar Kamara to be shown a card

Villa’s hard-hitting midfielder was booked in last weekend’s 1-0 win over Manchester City and he has picked up a yellow in two of his four Premier League meetings with Liverpool.
