Woman and child drown in Dandenong Creek

A woman and child have drowned after falling into a creek in Dandenong.

Emergency services were called to a section of the creek near Allan Street at 3.45pm on Monday after a witness reported seeing two people being swept away in the water.

“It’s believed the woman went to the aid of the child and also got into difficulty,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Police conducted a search of the area and located the unconscious pair, pulling them from the water and starting CPR.”

The pair, who are yet to be identified, were unable to be revived and died at the scene.

More than a dozen SES personal remain on scene, which extends hundreds of metres from the Allan Street bridge to the end of Steven Street.

Two tents have also been set up along the banks of the creek.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner, but are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
