Jets urged to trade former first-round pick ahead of trade deadline

With the trade deadline just around the corner, the New York Jets could be open for business.
They’re currently tied for the worst record in football, matched only by the New Orleans Saints. Given the current state of the roster, you could argue that they should be looking to accrue as much draft capital as possible to fill their holes in the coming 2026 NFL Draft.
But should the Jets part ways with players who have the potential to be cornerstones of the team? Bleacher Report seems to think so.
Jets urged to trade DE Jermaine Johnson for Day 2 pick
According to BR’s Brad Gagnon, New York should be looking to trade former first-round pick Jermaine Johnson for a day two draft pick.
“The team appears set to focus on Will McDonald IV up front, and Johnson just hasn’t gotten it done,” wrote Gagnon.
“He’s slated to cost a rebuilding team $13.4 million in his 2026 option year, so now is the time to extract something for him from a contender hoping a change of setting will help the 2022 first-round pick flourish.”
While the Jets are certainly in need of draft capital, Johnson is arguably their best and most complete edge rusher, capable of stopping the run and rushing the passer.
Will McDonald is a good player, but he isn’t a three-down edge; he’s more suited for obvious passing downs.
Since being selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Johnson has played in over 38 games, totaling 11 sacks, 15 run stuffs, and one interception.
Yes, a second-round draft pick would help the team next year, but Johnson’s value to the defense supercedes that, and New York is likely better off hanging onto their Florida State product, as he could be a player that helps push the Jets in the right direction.
