Kentucky continues to bring up the rear at the base of the SEC and is still searching for its first conference win of the year ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Auburn. The Tigers aren’t much better off by comparison, though they at least have the SEC monkey off their back after last week’s win over Arkansas stopped a slide of four straight defeats.
Conjure up a little more of that, and there’s every chance Auburn will still go to a bowl game this year, with minnow Mercer still to play between underdog matchups against Vanderbilt and Alabama. Lose, however, and the target on head coach Hugh Freeze’s back may look a little larger come Sunday.
The Wildcats ditched former Auburn quarterback Zach Calzada near the start of the season and have looked a lot more productive with redshirt freshman Cutter Boley calling the shots. While last week’s 56-34 loss to Tennessee wasn’t pretty, Boley impressed with five touchdown passes and 330 yards, marking him out as one asset Auburn needs to cage to gain traction this weekend.
