WWE Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio retained his title against Penta and Rusev in a Triple Threat match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The champion used underhanded tactics to secure the victory. Late in the match, Rusev had Penta trapped in The Accolade submission. As Penta was about to tap, the bell rang, confusing Rusev into releasing the hold.
It was revealed that Mysterio had used a ring hammer to strike the bell, deceiving Rusev. An enraged Rusev chased Mysterio on the floor and was shoved into the steel steps for his efforts.
Back in the ring, Penta gained control of the hammer and swung at Mysterio. Mysterio dodged the attack, causing Penta to accidentally strike Rusev. Mysterio then sent Penta into the ring post and hit a Frog Splash on the downed Rusev for the pinfall.
The match, which had no disqualifications, saw Rusev and Penta initially cooperate to attack the champion.
Mysterio also attempted a tribute to Eddie Guerrero by bringing a chair into the ring. He tossed the chair to Rusev, pretending to have been hit. However, the referee confirmed it was a no-DQ match, and Rusev then legally hit Mysterio with the chair.
Earlier, Rusev had also locked The Accolade on Mysterio, but Penta broke up that submission attempt with a superkick.
