Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is rooting for Blue Jays to win World Series

Sorry to the Toronto Raptors, but everybody there has their attention zeroed in on the 2025 World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays have it all the way to the championship series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

As the series is tied 1-1, the Blue Jays’ Game 1 blowout win has turned this into an October classic. A surprise, considering most pundits had this being an easy matchup for LA’s billion-dollar machine on the cusp of three championships in five years.

Headlined by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Blue Jays sport one of baseball’s best lineups. A 1-9 machine has put up lopsided run numbers throughout their postseason journey to this point.

Count Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as a Blue Jays fan. After the Oklahoma City Thunder collected a 117-100 win over the Atlanta Hawks, he was asked about Toronto’s run to the World Series. It’s their first appearance since 1993. They went 98-64 this past regular season.

“It’s huge. It’s big. Just going to the Finals myself, I know how hard it is,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “Make it to the World Series is impressive. I’m pretty sure they want to do more than just go to the World Series. They want to win. They got the first game, three more to go. They’re on the right track. It’s exciting for the city for sure.”

Even though Gilgeous-Alexander is technically from the small town of Hamilton, it’s close enough to Toronto that most non-locals count the two as the same. The reigning MVP has made it known how big of a Raptors fan he was growing up, as it’s the only NBA franchise in Canada.

Also interesting to see Gilgeous-Alexander relate his NBA journey to the Blue Jays. He experienced in his own profession what it took to win an NBA championship with the Thunder these past playoffs. OKC’s quest involved a pair of Game 7 blowout wins.

While Gilgeous-Alexander likely won’t have time to keep up with the World Series, he’ll root from a distance as he continues to roll along in the infancy stages of the 2025-26 regular season.
