India needed a spark and Amanjot Singh delivered it in spectacular fashion.
In front of a roaring home crowd at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Indian all-rounder produced a stunning direct-hit run-out to dismiss South Africa’s Tazmin Brits, drawing first blood in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 final.
South Africa, chasing a challenging 299-run target, had looked steady in the opening exchanges. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Brits weathered the early pressure with composure, finding timely boundaries and building a solid platform.
By the end of the ninth over, the Proteas were cruising at 51 without loss, frustrating the Indian attack.
With frontline bowlers Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma struggling to find the breakthrough, India needed something special — and Amanjot provided just that.
When Brits pushed for a risky single after a soft nudge to mid-off, Amanjot pounced. In one fluid motion, she scooped, turned, and released a pinpoint throw that caught Brits short of her crease.
The stumps shattered, and so did South Africa’s early rhythm.
India’s Batting Sets the Stage
Earlier, half-centuries from Shafali Verma (87) and Deepti Sharma (58) powered India to a competitive 298/7 after being put into bat in a rain-delayed start.
The opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana (45) and Shafali set the tone, adding 104 runs before South Africa’s bowlers clawed back. Sharma’s fluent fifty ensured India posted a total worthy of a final and one that gave their bowlers something to defend under pressure.
With both India and South Africa eyeing their maiden Women’s World Cup crown, Amanjot’s moment of brilliance may just prove to be the turning point that defines the night.
