Gerard Butler’s Critically Panned Action Flick Is a Free Streaming Hit in America

One of the biggest success stories at the 2025 box office has been the How to Train Your Dragon remake, which earned just short of $650 million worldwide and widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences, including a near-perfect 97% score from the latter on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Praised for its ability to transform the heart of the animated original into a successful live-action flick, this wouldn’t have been possible without retaining several names throughout the transition, including the ever-brilliant Gerard Butler.

But it isn’t only Butler’s How to Train Your Dragon that is proving popular this year, with his divisive 2018 action flick currently storming the streaming charts. At the time of writing, the pulse-racing heist thriller Den of Thieves is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Tubi in the U.S., joining a list of other eye-catching titles, including Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s Commando, the classic Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, the Tom Hanks-led A League of Their Own, and the current chart topper, Stephen Sommers’ fantasy hit The Mummy. For anyone who has yet to see Den of Thieves, here’s a look at the movie’s synopsis:

“Nick O’Brien is the hard-drinking leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Ray Merrimen is the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law. O’Brien, Merrimen and their crews soon find themselves on a direct collision course as the criminals hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist — the city’s Federal Reserve Bank.”

Was ‘Den of Thieves’ a Box Office Hit?

The recent sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, might’ve flopped at the box office, but how did the 2018 original fare? Produced on a reported budget of $30 million, the film more than doubled its investment with a strong global haul of $80 million. Split between $45 million in domestic revenue and a further $35 million from overseas markets, the movie’s global gross was enough to help it into the list of the 100 highest-grossing movies of 2018, as well as making it the ninth highest-grossing STX Entertainment movie of all time.

Den of Thieves is a streaming hit on Tubi. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest streaming stories.
