Bob Trumpy, an original Cincinnati Bengal who had a 30-year television and radio career after playing for the team, has died. He was 80 years old.

“I’ve known Bob since we started here and he had an extraordinary career as both a player and a broadcaster,” Bengals president Mike Brown said in a statement, per Bengals.com. “He did it all very well and I regret his passing.”

Trumpy called four Super Bowls and three Olympics. He announced NFL games on NBC TV and network radio from 1978 to 2007.

In 2014, Trumpy received the Pete Rozelle Radio and Television award for “long-time exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football.”

As a player, Trumpy spent his entire career with the Bengals, from 1968 to 1977. He was named to four Pro Bowls, and was considered a pioneer as a pass-catching tight end.

Trumpy was selected by the Bengals in the 12th round of the 1968 draft. A 6-foot-6, 228-pound athlete with a basketball background, Trumpy went to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons and earned All-Pro honors in 1969.

Trumpy started hosting the “Sports Talk” radio program on 700 WLW-AM before his playing career ended.

Trumpy said being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame “never crossed his mind.”
