TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team saw its bid for a weekend sweep come up short on Saturday afternoon, falling 3–0 to Union College in front of 2,710 fans at Houston Field House. Freshman goaltender Nate Krawchuk turned in another strong performance with 33 saves, while the Engineers blocked 15 shots as a team in the defensive battle.
Union opened the scoring midway through the first period on a power play, capitalizing on RPI’s second penalty of the frame. The Engineers answered with sustained pressure late in the period, highlighted by point shots from Matthew Buckley and Rainers Rullers, and a rebound chance for Dovar Tinling that was smothered by Union goaltender Cameron Korpi.
The second period saw RPI generate several quality looks while outshooting Union 12–11. Alfred Lindberg and Jagger Tapper each had dangerous attempts in tight, and Filip Sitar narrowly missed on a rebound opportunity during one of the Engineers’ three power plays. The defensive pairing of Kaz Sobieski and Thomas Klassek held strong, combining for five blocks to keep the deficit at one through forty minutes.
Krawchuk continued his sharp play in the third period, as the freshman made a series of saves on high-danger chances, including back-to-back stops on Brandon Buhr during a penalty kill. However, Union doubled its lead at 5:38 before sealing the win with an empty-net goal in the closing seconds. Krawchuk’s outing marked his third consecutive 30-plus-save performance.
The Engineers will enjoy the friendly confines of Houston Field House for the next four contests, beginning with a 7:00 pm tilt against St. Lawrence on Friday night.
