You have to have a very long memory to be able to recall the most recent of Elche’s nine victories against Barcelona. In fact, chances are you weren’t born – I certainly wasn’t – when the team from Alicante beat the giants from up the coast. To further add emphasis to the scale of Elche’s task, they have never beaten Barcelona away.
The teams’ most recent meeting was back in April 2023, when Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace, Elche being relegated to the second division at the end of the season. This is their first match against each other since Elche’s recent rebound back to the top flight.
