Are the Bills getting a new stadium? What to know about Buffalo’s $2.1B project

Sunday’s matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs could be the last one ever played at the current Highmark Stadium, unless the AFC rivals return to Orchard Park again in the playoffs.

Are the Bills getting a new stadium? Yes, and construction is already underway.

The Bills are currently playing in Highmark Stadium, but are building a new, $2.1 billion stadium right across Abbott Road. It is expected to be ready for the 2026 NFL season.

Here’s what to know about the Bills’ future home:

Where is the new Bills stadium being built?

Right across from the current Highmark Stadium, still in Orchard Park, New York.

When will the new Bills stadium open?

The Bills expect to play all home games in the new venue, currently called New Highmark Stadium, starting in 2026.

Is the new Bills stadium a dome or will it have a roof?

It will remain open-air, with Buffalo football in the elements. There isn’t a full roof, but a canopy will cover about 64% of seats to protect fans from snow and wind and trap crowd noise.

How many seats will the new stadium have?

About 62,000, down nearly 10,000 from Highmark Stadium, with a big increase in premium seating (suites, clubs, ledge seats).

Will the field be grass or turf?

Natural grass, supported by SubAir heating and winter grow-lights.

How was the new stadium funded?

It includes $850 million in public funding from New York State and Erie County. The Bills are responsible for $690 million, supported partly by PSLs (personal seat licenses).

Why build a new stadium?

Highmark Stadium opened in 1973. Modernizing fan experience, revenue, and long-term team stability were central to the deal. The Bills’ new 30-year lease locks the franchise in Buffalo through 2055.
