The Chiefs on Saturday elevated running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire from the practice squad to their 53-man active roster ahead of Sunday afternoon’s Week 9 NFL game against the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park, New York.
Edwards-Helaire, a former first-round NFL Draft pick, will provide depth at his position with first-stringer Isiah Pacheco sidelined by an injury sustained in the Chiefs’ Week 8 win against the Washington Commanders.
Edwards-Helaire was waived by KC last December but rejoined the Chiefs in late August after finishing last season with the Saints (who let him go late in training camp this past summer).
The Chiefs selected Edwards-Helaire, 26, with the No. 32 overall pick in the first round of the 2020 draft out of LSU. His best season with the Chiefs was his rookie year, when he rushed for 803 yards and four touchdowns on 181 carries.
During that 2020 rookie season, Edwards-Helaire rushed for 161 yards on 26 carries against the Bills in a 26-17 Chiefs victory at Buffalo on “Monday Night Football.”
His production declined each of the next three seasons, however, with injuries playing a role. He has played in 48 games, making 32 starts, with the Chiefs, totalling 1,891 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. He appeared in two games with the Saints last season.
In activating Edwards-Helaire, the Chiefs went with their former No. 1 over fellow running back Elijah Mitchell, a free agent signed after last season.
Edwards-Helaire will join Sunday starter Kareem Hunt and rookie Brashard Smith as the Chiefs’ available running backs against Buffalo.
Also activated by the Chiefs on Saturday was interior offensive lineman CJ Hanson.
